The “Salem (Massachusetts) Gazette”. One large sheet folded in
half, giving 4 pages, 11 ¾ x 19 ½”. Covers period of turmoil leading
to the War of 1812, begun June 18, 1812. Most have some coverage of
the conflict growing between Britain and France, and/or sentiment in
this country regarding military needs and possible conflict. Good
deal of political reporting. Interesting advertising. To get a good
taste of the atmosphere of the days just before the War of 1812, more
than one paper is suggested, especially as they are uniquely
inexpensive. Original. A bit tan. Extreme edges show wear and
scattered little tears, prox. ¼”. Old style lettering with “f”s for
“s”s. Have very few. Each, as they come…$14

- June 9, 1812. Just 9 days prior to the
War. Long article on President Monroe’s address to Congress in which
the full details of the situation which pulls the U.S. into War, vis-a-vie
France & England. Also long anti-war plea. Also confidential reports
that it is believed the President has already sent to Congress a
Declaration of War. Spine partially parting. Super. $40
- July 31, 1812. Just a month and a half
after the Declaration of War. Front page has incredibly insulting
piece on Connecticut refusing to supply a single company of militia to
the Federal government. Every scathing term of insult imaginable is
off-set in italics and runs a full 14 lines. Much more on the same
subject – News from Britain that they repealed the Orders in Council
(commerce restricted over which we went to War) – Arguments over
forming an Army – Resistance over National Army being built by Gen.
Dearborn – States want only state controlled militia…more!! Light
water stain on upper left edge. Typical wear. Very good. $65
- September 15, 1812. Three months after
Declaration of War. Front page a eulogy of General Lingan. Inside 2
pages practically all War news – full description of the famed Naval
battle between the Constitution and the Guerierre. Much on the
Canadian campaign and Detroit. Advertising (they all have). $55
- December 29, 1812. Six months after
Declaration of War. Front page primarily a detailed report on
Napolean’s situation in Russia and that the French are having
trouble. Also proclamation from Britain that British sailors had
better not sail in U.S. ships as crew on pain of death. More on
Russia inside. Essentially no U.S. war news. Paper water stained
across one corner. Frayed/parted spine. Some creases. Aged a bit
darker. $10
