DRAMATIC & LARGE INDIAN CHIEF CHARGER (PLATTER) C.1890-1900.
More Photos, Click Here
A bit over 13" in diameter, heavy china charger featuring a
full color chromolitho and hand painted Indian Chief portrait nearly
10" across. Extremely rare and important subject matter seldom
encountered and virtually never excelled in artistic merit, dramatic
presentation, accuracy, and extensive use of color. Green border
overlaid with gilt highlights in rococo scrolls. The chief's name
"WHITE HORSE" appears below portrait. Condition is extremely
excellent. Marked on back "HAYNES/BALTo". Also
marked in handwritten gold "G. R. 1901", probably done by dealer when
sold. These were routinely sold from at least 1890. Iron
wire hanger present, strung through holes provided for this purpose.
Have occasionally seen one of these decorative, centerpiece quality
chargers offered at the renowned Las Vegas winter Arms and Antiques
show for $950. Our price as usual, is much lower.

CAPTAIN JACK CRAWFORD “THE
POET SCOUT” BROADSIDE.
More Photos, Click Here
Here’s
a man who truly was a “Western” hero – a genuine character who did the
things others bragged about. He was a scout, a cowboy, an explorer, a
prospector and more. He even operated a bar room in Fort Craig, New
Mexico while being a tea-totaler (he promised his mother he wouldn’t
drink). We have an original broadside advertising his personal
appearance which is said to be…”not a lecture but a budget of Jewels,
sparkling Pathetic, Humorous, Original”. Title of his show is “The
Camp Fire and the Trail. Glowing pictures, Recitations, Thrilling
stories, etc., etc., Two Hours of Rare Enjoyment. Nothing like him
ever seen before…Nothing like him will ever be seen again.”. 9 ¾ x
12”. Broadside to put up and primarily designed to be sent out by
mail. Top third of page elaborates on the program. The bottom
two-thirds plus the back side is filled with personal testimonials as
to the excellence of the men and the show. All powerful people and
genuine high regards. Bottom of page gives place of show (Norton
Hall, Granville, NY), the date Dec. 30, 1897, and Cost 25 cents. Top
has small photo of the long haired poet scout. Few people living at
that time could gather such glowing, important testimonials. Great
item from a Western legend. Excellent. $50
3 SAW - UNITED SPANISH WAR
VETERANS 1929 CAMPAIGN WALKING STICK.

Meant as
a novelty to promote their candidate for Commander-in-Chief, USWV in
the 1929 election. Most likely handed out to each member as he
arrived at the Denver, Colorado convention. Consists of a 36 3/8”
long, wood walking stick, square in cross section, tapered smaller as
it goes down. Grip area chamfered to 8-sided. Painted dark green, as
play on the fact that their candidate’s name was Green. The campaign
message stenciled in dull gold on all 4 sides, reading “GREEN FOR
COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF 1929/UNITED STATES/SPANISH AMERICAN WAR
VETERANS/DENVER, COLO.”. We can’t be positive which Green was the
candidate, but every possibility it was 1st Lt. John Wesley
Green of the Rough Riders, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry,
Troop G. He was prominent from the beginning of his service by
recruiting 45 men at Gallup, New Mexico, and serving both in Cuba,
becoming an intimate of Teddy Roosevelt, and in the Philippines. It
would seem likely that a candidate would have to have this type
prominence, and this Green seems to be our obvious choice, but can’t
say for sure. Cane is excellent with light wear. Comes with 3 pages
on J. W. Green from “The Spanish American War Centennial” website. In
45 years in the militaria business and collecting S.A.W. material,
this is only the second such cane we’ve seen.

Taft. Basically a parade flag on a stick, or used to decorate homes,
businesses, banquets. Star pattern is 8-7-8-7-8-8. Measures 6 x 9

1907 TEDDY "ROOSEVELT
BEARS" PITCHER,
BUFFALO POTTERY.
More Photos, Click Here
8” tall. One of the rarest and most desirable
items created which celebrates Teddy Roosevelt, and which relate at
the same time to the origins of the “TEDDY” Bear. Created by Buffalo
Pottery and dated 1907 in their base mark. This whimsical “Roosevelt
Bears” (so marked on the spout) pitcher features various vignette
renderings of Roosevelt caricatures as a bear carrying out numerous
daily activities over limerick-like descriptions. Brilliantly drawn
and colored, reeking with character of the time it was created. A
classic among collectors, rarely seen. When we purchased it in 1996,
we paid $1,150. Slightly later, one was sold at auction in Portsmouth
New Hampshire for $2,150…news clipping provided. In a recent move, our
pitcher was broken. A piece about 2” wide surrounding the handle came
away. This has been neatly epoxied back in place, fitting
beautifully. A small, ¼ x ¾” hole remains at a corner, near the top.
None of the damage affects the illustrations or the text. Just a
small bit of filigree needs to be reapplied, once the hole is
restored. In my experience of dealing in antiques for about 50 years,
this bit of restoration should be routine to one whose business it is
to restore pottery and china. As small as the remaining hairline
crack is, I expect a restorer could make this nearly invisible as
well. There is also a vertical aging crack, from the lip downward
about 2 1/2", opposite the corner with the hole (you can see this in
the 5th photo from the bottom). This is stable and not a
break. Before the unfortunate moving damage, this pitcher should have
brought $2,500-3,000. With the damage, it’s still a grand display;
the price is now fully adjusted to allow for restoration and profit.

6 SAW - "REMEMBER
THE MAINE" 1898 SPANISH AMERICAN WAR PAPERWEIGHT.
More Photos, Click Here
Original antique. Nearly 3” in diameter and 1
¾” high. Shaped like a sphere which relaxed a bit. Bottom is ground
flat. Inside the clear glass weight is a white rendering of the Maine
over “FEB 15 ‘98/REMEMBER THE MAINE”. Beneath the picture of the MAINE
is another level of decoration, but I can’t be sure what it represents –
possibly the explosion which sunk the Maine. This style paperweight is
the scarcest I know of (disregard the reflections in the photos).

(possibly Maywood Illinois) who gave these to his customers.

field uniform, standing in front of his tent. Shown full length. He
wears regulation slouch hat, 5-button blue sack coat of Indian Wars
origin (two chevrons on sleeve) lighter blue trousers with white stripe
down leg, and leggings over shoes. I am fairly sure his rifle is the
M1888 Ramrod Bayonet – Trapdoor Springfield Rifle. Bayonet is in the
out position, and it is not the angular style. He
wears a Mills belt. Photo is clear; slightly faded. Image
size is 5 1/8 x 7”, mounted on a cardstock mat 8 x 10”. Mat has some
damp stains. Excellent soldier image. $45

THREE DECORATIVE ANTIQUE
CLOCK PENDULUMS
Circa SPANISH AMERICAN WAR-1900.

1. Very rare and important patriotic pendulum from a Spanish
American War celebratory oak shelf clock. There was a series of these
clocks each with a different bust of a General, or President McKinley,
or a full length picture of the U.S.S. Maine on top, and the glass
tablet had gold patriotic themes. The pendulum, still on its adjustable
shaft is faced with a rampant eagle on American Shield against a panoply
of flags and sunburst. Frequently this pendulum is mistaken for a Civil
War breast plate. Color is of aged bronze. Height is 3” tall.
Excellent condition. For one of these clocks missing this part, this is
a real find. 2. A fine stamped sheet brass pendulum
with adjustable shaft. Iron weight behind the circular brass facing.
Rococo scrolls and sprays form the top, over the circular portion.
Probably came from a tall shelf clock. Brass weighted portion is 4”
tall, plus shaft. Excellent. Retains most of original thin gilding.
3. Brass plated, highly decorative spelter metal. 3”
tall. Faced with profusion of high relief rococo scrolls, flowers and
leaves. Small oval hole in back, top and bottom, for suspending,
adjustable shaft, not included. Weight fine. Has dark bronzy patina.
All original and fine. #1 is worth our price alone.
All three only...$45

waving at parades and decorating homes, businesses, banquet halls, and
during the period of this flag’s life, there were plenty of each.
This flag’s life was from 4 January 1896 to November 16, 1907. William
McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt were presidents, and we fought the
Spanish American War changing radically the world’s geography. 4 3/8
x 7 ½”. White polished cotton with red stripes and blue canton

original sticks. All are excellent with few little holes, or small

Late
Indian War to Spanish American
War.
Typical
of what a soldier would have had. An exceptional addition to any
collection of soldier’s personal items. Grip is a light butter
colored ivory or similar material. On one side at center is a raised
spread eagle emblem almost 2” wide. Each end of the same side has a
stars and stripes design, with some depth. The reverse side has the
stars and stripes and designs, but no eagle. The blade is about mint,
and has the word “EXCELSIOR” etched on it. Whether this refers to New
York’s motto or not is unknown. Maker’s name is Henry
Mueller/Solingen, Germany, and the razor
comes in its original cardstock case which just shows some edge wear.

as worn by motorcyclists, aviators and autoists (most early ones were
open air). For any enthusiast engaged in any of these areas of
antique motivation, these gauntlets are guaranteed to add great
display appeal. Large and showy. 15 ½” long, with tan leather hands,
and large, contrasting, stiff black gauntlet cuffs. The gauntlets are
faced with dry, textured black oilcloth, with two black metal buttons
for decoration. Further, there are narrow cuff-adjusting straps which
just adds more detail and character; each button is marked “HAND/B.W.
Co/SEWED”. These were the best set of early gauntlets we’ve
encountered in 46 years in the business. Excellent condition. Some
minor stains in a few fingers on one. $95

collector or enthusiast of any of these early areas of motivation,
these gauntlets provide considerable display value. 16 ½” long.
Heavy black leather. Hands show light use. Huge black leather
gauntlet cuffs simply needing some black polish to replace the color
lost over time. Cuffs have two snap tabs each to tighten the
accordion end; each button marked “J. P.
LUTHER/BERLIN WIS/GLOVE CO”. Snap heads in place but the male halves
popped out. Second best pair of early driving/flying gauntlets I
recall ever seeing. Makes a very noticeable addition to a display –
has a way of bringing that early time alive.(Left
glove in photos has a brown tinge, but is only brighter light shining
in when photos were taken). $75

1906 "VIRGINIA
SONG" SHEET MUSIC.

Entitled "Ethel Levey's Virginia Song". Fashioned originally we
suppose, on hopes that Virginia would adopt it as something
semi-official, for use in public affairs. We are unaware of its
ultimate popularity, however, in 1906, it was a hit at the Herald
Square Theater in New York, in the musical play "George Washington,
Jr.". You couldn't get someone more famous than George M. Cohan.
Bright red, white and blue cover sheet. 10 3/4 x 13 3/4". 4 sheets.
